I’m thrilled to share that after more than seven months offline, Runway 08/26 at the Albuquerque International Sunport is about to roar back to life! Since its closure on October 17, 2024, for much-needed runway and lighting repairs and other maintenance, crews have been working around the clock to upgrade and modernize the Sunport’s primary east–west runway Federal Aviation Administration. As the airport’s main artery—handling the bulk of commercial airline operations and serving as the landing strip of choice for general aviation pilots—8/26 is critical to keeping New Mexico connected to the world ABQ Sunport.
A recent FAA NOTAM confirms that Runway 08/26 will remain closed through May 16, 2025, reopening immediately thereafter just in time for summer travel Notamify. The new high-intensity edge lights, centerline illumination, and cutting-edge LED fixtures will dramatically improve pilot visibility and precision on every arrival and departure.
This isn’t just a paint-and-lights job—it’s a testament to the dedication of the @ABQSunport team, the FAA, our contractors, and everyone who braved winter winds and spring storms to keep this project on schedule. I couldn’t be prouder of the collective effort that’s brought us to this moment.
Whether you’re a flight instructor, FBO operator, or weekend warbird enthusiast, the reopening of 8/26 means smoother operations, fewer delays, and a renewed confidence in Sunport infrastructure. Stay tuned for the official ribbon-cutting and first flight back—because very soon, we’ll all be saying, “Clear for takeoff Runway 8!” Kudos to @ABQSunport for lighting the way forward.
